HB 132 (Reps Buckner, Glanton, and Holcomb - D)

Amends Part 2 of Article 6 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 to add a new code section O.C.G.A. ยง 20-2-149.2 to require that the State Board of Education develop and implement a comprehensive civice education curicula for all high school and middle schools.  Such curricula shall generally include:

  • Formal instruction, using interactive methods about the core documents, instititions and processes of local, state, and federal governments.
  • Oportunities to apply classroom-based knowledge in "real life" situations, including community service, civic engagement projects, and extracurricular activities, combined with time for reflection and analysis of these experiences.
  • Classroom discussion of local, national, and international issues, public policies, and events that put into social and political context the facts related to civic knowledge.
  • Classroom materials and discussion of the process of political and social change.
  • Classoom discussion of the values, responsibilities, rights, and benefits related to being and engaged and responsible citizen in one's community, state, and nation.
  • Instruction in the operation of the court system, the indictment process and the purpose and function of grand juries.
